For more information about the inner workings of eGEMs, please see the journal's official Governance Policy.

Publication Frequency

The journal’s general issue publishes online as a continuous volume and issue throughout the year. Articles appear as soon as they are ready to ensure that there are no unnecessary delays in getting content publicly available.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Authors of articles published remain the copyright holders and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, and share the article according to the Creative Commons license agreement.

In order to be sustainable and maintain open access status, eGEMs charges an APC per published paper. This fee covers the cost of managing rigorous peer review, thorough copyediting and layout design as well as publication and promotion.

Authors are encouraged to publish their data in recommended repositories. For a list of generic and subject specific repositories that meet our peer review criteria, see here.

Archiving Policy

The journal’s publisher, Ubiquity Press, focuses on making content discoverable and accessible through indexing services. Content is also archived around the world to ensure long-term availability.

eGEMs is indexed in NLM Pubmed CentralCrossRef, JISC KB+, SHERPA RoMEO, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Cengage Learning, and Google Scholar. In addition, all journals are available for harvesting via OAI-PMH.

To ensure permanency of all publications, this journal also utilises CLOCKSS, and LOCKSS archiving systems to create permanent archives for the purposes of preservation and restoration.

If the journal is not indexed by your preferred service, please let us know by emailing support@ubiquitypress.com or alternatively by making an indexing request directly with the service.

Annotation

The journal platform includes in-browser annotation and text highlighting options on full text formats via hypothes.is. Readers will require a hypothes.is account to create annotations, and will have the option to make these publicly available, available to a group, or private.

History

eGEMs (Generating Evidence and Methods to improve patient outcomes) is AcademyHealth’s open access, peer-reviewed online journal dedicated to accelerating research and quality improvement using electronic health data. The journal first began publishing in 2013 as part of the mission of the EDM (Electronic Data Methods) Forum, a community supported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) with the goal of advancing the national dialogue on the use of electronic health data for research and quality improvement. Since its launch, eGEMs has published over 180 papers with well over 150,000 downloads—all highlighting cutting-edge work from leaders in the field and sharing emerging approaches to redesigning the health system. As eGEMs’ publication numbers grew, all journal articles were indexed in Google Scholar, the Directory of Open Access Journals, EBSCOhost, and the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central. With the close of the AHRQ grant in 2016, eGEMs became AcademyHealth’s first in-house journal, and continues to publish methods, lessons, and research that contribute to the next generation of learning health systems.
